Elections & Voter Registration
Elections in Westport Island take place in June and November at the Old Town Hall on 1217 Main Road. Voting hours depend on whether there is a State/Federal ballot or if the vote is for local issues only. Preceding the election, voting hours will be posted at the head of the island, at the Town Office, at the Town Hall and on the town website. For elections that include a State/Federal ballot polls are open between 8 am and 8 pm. For elections with local ballots only polls must be open at least 4 hours; the times will be posted.
Registering to Vote
To vote – or to have your signature count on a petition – you must be registered to vote in your town of residence.
When registering to vote, you will need government ID and proof of residency. If your Westport Island address is on your Maine Driver’s License or State ID, your license/state ID will serve as both. If not, you will also need proof of residency, e.g.: a current utility bill, a bank statement, a paycheck stub or other official or government document that shows your current address on Westport Island.
In Maine, voters can vote in the 30 days preceding an election by voting in person at the Town Office during office hours, or by filling out an absentee ballot application to pick up a ballot, or have a ballot mailed or delivered. Absentee ballot applications become available 90 days before the election. For elections with federal/state ballots, application may be made online at: Secretary of State, Division of Elections, Absentee Ballots. For a complete guide to absentee voting, see the State Absentee Voting Guide. To be counted, absentee ballots must be received by the municipal clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
On June 13, 2023 there will be a municipal election for 3rd Select Board Member, Representative to RSU #12 Board of Directors, and Road Commissioner, and a referendum on the RSU #12 budget. The RSU #12 budget will first be voted on at a Budget Meeting on May 24 at the Chelsea Elementary School that Westport Island voters are welcome to attend and vote at.
Absentee voting is underway and will continue through June 8. Vote absentee in person at the Town Office during regular business hours, or fill out an absentee ballot application to pick up a ballot or have one delivered or mailed. The municipal election ballot is available now, and the RSU #12 ballot will be available after the Budget Meeting on May 24.
