Tree Warden

Background

According to State law, the Tree Warden is responsible for:

.... the care and control of all public shade trees upon and along the highways and in the parks of the municipality and all streets within any village limits. They shall enforce all laws relating to the preservation of those trees.  (Title 30-A, MRSA §3282)

Practically speaking, Westport’s Tree Warden acts as a resource to residents regarding tree conservation and concerns about possible disease and pests impacting trees on the island.

What the Tree Warden Does

  • Responds to residents’ inquiries about possible diseases and pests affecting trees;
  • Provides information and referral; and
  • Advises the Select Board on possible outbreaks of invasive species.
