Westport Island’s School Board Members—RSU #12
Westport is a member of Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit #12, and as a part of RSU #12 gives residents “school choice.” School choice means that a student whose parents live here can choose to attend any public or private school that will accept him or her. The Town pays the cost of tuition up to the State-determined, average per-student cost.
Parents, or guardians, will be asked by the school that their child will be attending to complete an RSU #12 Residency Verification Form at the Town Office for the Town to validate and confirm its tuition responsibility. Our supervisory unit manages the administrative process of educating our students regardless of what school they attend.
The Unit's School Board is made up of 17 members from the 7 towns in our Regional Supervisory Union. The School Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at Chelsea Elementary School. Meeting dates, times and instructions for participating can be found on the RSU #12 website. The current board members from Westport Island are: Richard DeVries and Mary Coventry.
Our members are elected for staggered three-year terms at the municipal election in June.
See the RSU's website for complete information on Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit #12. In addition to information on the primary and secondary school system and administration, residents can find information on the Adult Education Program which offers a range of educational and enrichment programs and is available to all Westport Island Residents. Questions regarding the Adult Education Program can be directed to: (207) 549-4687.
Most of the Adult Education classes for the Winter/Spring 2021 semester will be conducted remotely -- via Zoom, Google Meets and Webex -- for the safety of students and staff. The Winter/Spring 2021 Catalogue is available online.
